A Girl With A Dream

Hey Shark Savers! I’m not a journalism major, I’m not looking to work anywhere near journalism. Don’t look for perfect punctuation and grammar, that’s not why I’m here. I am a Law student with a passion for shark conservation. I have been fascinated and enthralled by the marine world since I was 2 years old. At least that’s what I’m told. My mom was the first one to take me to SeaWorld. Years later she informed me that she knew, from the moment we walked through the SeaWorld entrance, that my future was with the sharks and whales in the world.

This brings us to our current point. I spent my teen years raptly concerned with the welfare of whales, seals and dolphins. Don’t get me wrong all of these creatures need attention to take them (and keep them) off of endangered species lists. However, I saw a documentary about shark finning in my late teens that changed my life, or rather changed its direction. The name of the documentary is very aptly titled Sharkwater. A documentary so well filmed and thought out it can’t help but change the way you see our oceans as well as our view of sharks.

For as long as I can remember my dream in life was to swim with Whale Sharks, this dream has now vastly expanded on itself. I want to research Whale Sharks in Honduras, swim with Great Whites in the quickly shrinking Great Barrier Reef, take down data on the Lemon Sharks in Bimini, and gently stroke a Nursing Shark among many others. Hopefully, the chance to fulfill my dream will present itself, until then I am blogging, studying for Finals, and doing everything in my power to save sharks (even if it’s done one tweet at a time). Help me in this fulfilling journey … Whether you follow this blog (I hope to see you again!), follow my twitter (www.twitter.com/banfinning), sign a few petitions, or maybe you’ll embark on an excursion with the famed Sea Shepherd (a dream I, also, hope to fulfill!). Thanks again for your time, it warms my heart to know you stopped by πŸ™‚ Leave a comment and let me know what you think … the good, the bad, and the ugly!!

Love Always,

A Girl With A Dream

  3. Hey – This blog is great and it is awesome to see a student, like myself, blogging and caring about our oceans! I would love to talk to you more about ocean conservation but I noticed that there is no contact on your site so if you get a chance send me an email and we can talk more!

  4. Great blog! Thanks for spreading awareness about this issue!

  5. That was inspiring, I’ve been a shark fanatic ever since i was very little, and even now sharks are my favoriet animal in the world. Oh, and i’m with you with the great wite, (my fav. ^.^) Please, keep trying to inspire. (your very good at it.) =)

    yours truly,

  6. Hmm now where have I heard that before?… It looks like the two of us are in the same boat! Just like yourself I have loved the sea since a young age and although I did not make it to SeaWorld until I was 7 years old I did make it to the closer Vancouver Aquarium and there fell in love with the majestic predators of the sea as well. Sharkwater changed my perspective on what I want to do in my future and now I am studying hard to try and go through grade 12 to then continue on to the University of Victoria to study Marine Biology, Marine Veterinary, Underwater Photography/Video, and start my journey in shark conservation. See all that you have started here on a simple blog has really inspired me. Up until now my conservation efforts has been confined to passing on the story of Sharkwater to anyone who will listen and even those who won’t, and signing any petition I can get my hands on. Now I think the web is the next dive site to explore and I thank you. If, no when, I do establish my blog on shark fining and conservation I would love to get in further contact with you. There is no Ocean without the sharks and it just makes me so happy to see that there are others out there who agree and are taking action against shark fining and standing up for some of the most magnificent creatures on Earth.

    Thank You,

    – The Girl with Salt-Water in her Veins

      Most Sincerely,
      A Girl With a Dream
