Is Shark Fin Soup a meal of the past? With the shark conservation movement gaining a larger platform through social media services you would think that of Shark Fin Soup is a meal of the past in the United States. Unfortunately, it is not a meal of the past quite like you would think.
The Animal Welfare Institute says that as many as 200 restaurants throughout the United States serve Shark Fin Soup. 200!! Landlocked states like Arizona have at least four restaurants that serve Shark Fin Soup. There are only 12 states in the United States that ban the sale of Shark Fin Soup. The United States needs to be better!
I urge you to stop going to these restaurants and write to their owners to encourage removing Shark Fin Soup from their menus. Write letters to governors, mayors, and other local legislators to ban the sale of Shark Fin Soup in your state!

Shark Fin Soup has caused, and is continuing to cause, dangerous imbalances in marine communities worldwide.

The countdown is now 30 minutes to Shark Week 2019. Shark Week originally premiered on Discovery Channel on July 17, 1988. Shark Week has seen a drastic shift from feeding off (pun intended!) of the fear from the release of Jaws.
After years of fear inducing information regarding sharks Discovery Channel has transitioned into a conservation based videos. The use of Marine Biologists and Conservationists as well as shark attack victims encouraging shark conservation has created a platform to encourage shark conservation.
Following along with Discovery Channel’s Shark Week 2019 schedule here. Follow us here.

Shark Week Premieres Sunday, July 28, at 8:00 p.m. (EST)

Another step in the right direction!! The New York State Assembly voted unanimously to ban shark fin trade in the State. A measure that is aimed at the availability of Shark Fin Soup on the menus of several restaurants in New York. Archaic, right? Who would have thought that one of the most leading edge communities in the foodie world would still be engaging in the sale, use, and trade of shark fins for a soup that is virtually tasteless. How anti-avant-garde of you, New York.
The legislation is set to hit the desk of Governor Cuomo who will, hopefully, sign the bill and make New York the seventh state to ban the use, possession and sale of shark fins in the United States. Linda B. Rosenthal, D-Mass., says of the bill, “New York must not be complicit in the reprehensible practice of shark finning, which has led to the demise of shark populations worldwide.”

Antonio Munoz, D-Chicago, is working to make it illegal to possess shark fins. At this time only coastal states have bans/laws such as this one. Surprisingly Senator Matt Murphy, D-Palatine, was opposed to the bill as he questioned why Illinois needs the ban. The bill in question, Bill HB4119, was “passed the House and Senate by a large margin, will be sent to the governor’s desk.” I guess baby steps are better than no steps at all 🙂

A new law banning the consumption of shark fins in Hawaii has made shark conservation just a little easier. While Hawaii was the last state added to the USA it is the first state in the US (and the world according to Iris Ho of http://www.takepart.com) to implement a law that “prohibits the possession, sale or distribution of shark fins, will help arrest the cruel practice of shark finning and enhance shark conservation.”

Shark Trust created the this first time award for Richard Lochhead. Ali Hood of Shark Trust is quoted as saying “”This award to Mr Lochhead and the Scottish Government is the first of its kind to policy makers and reflects their decisive action in addressing the issue of shark finning.” This is an incredible step in a direction to further promote the conservation of sharks and a step to show the world they should be respected, not feared.
